Finally

-three spools of thread,
-one machine servicing to fix @$??# upper tension
-two trips to sewing machine stores to oogle possible new machines
-many times leaving the house with bits and pieces of thread stuck to me
-1 3/4" squares

.....now to start the 1" square one
